| Mission Statement This web site is dedicated to the ancestors, descendants and siblings of Joseph Benjamin H(o)uston and Lucy Annis Grass, and will act as a single-point-of-contact for shared communications, notices, pictures and genealogy. Some History... As new folks moved west across this continent, their occupations matched their needs. Coal was needed to fuel the industry and homes. People had to settle near water, so that's where the towns and cities bloomed. South Central, Iowa and Ray County, Missouri, was at the right elevation to access the coal at the edge of hills. Those with mining experience, were among the first there. The towns were built around the coal industry and farming. As I looked through the history of this area and the people, I saw my family surnames' movement from Virginia and Kentucky, across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Landing in Appanoose and Wayne counties along the river in Central to South Central Iowa, then southwest to Layfayette, Ray, Bates and Cass Counties in Missouri. This site is about a few of those families. A lot of us share Elizabeth Luella STEWART/STUART-H(O)USTON-ALA and her ancestors. After her relationship with John Huston, and while married to George Francis ALA in Butler, Missouri, she contracted consumption. George and Elizabeth, traveling in wagons were moving to the Southwest part of the country for the dry air. Elizabeth passed away in Greenville or Greene County, Missouri. The earliest (98% confidence level, need more confirmation) birth date in this tree so far is, Isham Tolley born 1764 in Virginia, father of Elizabeth TOLLEY, mother of Minerva A. WEIR. Minerva married John GRASS, who's children I believe connects the GRASS side. My focus in the begining was with my maternal grandparents, Joseph Benjamin HOUSTON and Lucy Annis GRASS. The search is now on, to connect with their siblings. Lucy's father, William Isaac GRASS, who married Elizabeth CORAM, is another priority to document. I have had little to no results searching for Joseph B. HOUSTON's, father John HUSTON and mother, Elizabeth Luella STEWART/STUART. At the time of this writing the resources show that Lucy was born in south-central Iowa, and Joseph was born in Monroe County, Missouri. They had 14 children on their trek from Marshalltown, Iowa, and as far south as Wellington, Missouri. They settled in a mining camp in Elmira, Ray County, Missouri, later moving to Excelsior Springs, Clay County Missouri.
